About this book: The Record Plant Studios in Sausalito, Marin County, California, was a renowned music recording facility. Known as the "resort studio," and as “The Plant Recording Studios.” The location attracted legendary artists from across the globe. With its nautical-inspired interior and groovy vibe, it became a creative haven and world renowned recording studio for some of the biggest names in music history: for icons like: Fleetwood Mac, Bob Marley, The Grateful Dead, Prince, Jefferson Starship, Van Morrison, Rick James, Journey, Carlos Santana, Stevie Wonder, Linda Ronstadt, Metallica, Sly and the Family Stone, Tower of Power, Dave Matthews Band and many many others.

About the Book

The Record Plant studio in Sausalito, Marin County, California, was one of America’s most desirable music recording facilities from the early 1970’s. Known as the “resort studio.”, and established just across the Golden Gate Bridge from the happening scene in San Francisco, it was one of three top-tier US recording studios designed as an “artist living room”.

'The Plant' had a groovy aesthetic and vibe that drew in some of the most iconic musical artists of all time: Fleetwood Mac, The Grateful Dead, Bob Marley, Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, Jefferson Airplane, Rick James, Prince, Santana, Linda Ronstadt, Carrie Underwood, Van Morrison, Tom Petty, Sammy Hagar, Journey, Metallica, Huey Lewis and the News, and Dave Matthews Band, to name a few.

The first Record Plant was opened in New York City in 1968 by Chris Stone and Gary Kellgren. The second, in Los Angeles, opened in 1969, followed by the third in Sausalito in 1972. With its nautical-inspired interior, incorporating complex and at times psychedelically patterned wood paneling, ceilings and floors, 'The Plant' had a groovy aesthetic and vibe that drew in some of the most iconic musical artists of all time: Fleetwood Mac, The Grateful Dead, Bob Marley, Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, Jefferson Airplane, Rick James, Prince, Santana, Linda Ronstadt, Carrie Underwood, Van Morrison, Tom Petty, Sammy Hagar, Journey, Metallica, Huey Lewis and the News, and Dave Matthews Band, to name a few. About the Author

Katiana Giacona is a professional DJ, certified naturalist, author, and mother. She is a lifelong local to the area of interest, and a member of the Sausalito Historical Society. Katiana came across the Plant by chance, working as a DJ and at the front desk at Harmonia, a wellness-oriented social club which occupied half of the building. One day, behind a closed door at the end of an odd unused hallway, she discovered the original Studios, a maze of intricately-crafted and dusty rooms, seemingly forgotten for 20 years; sitting as they were left, a time capsule from the musical heart of 1970’s and 80’s and 90’s America. Katiana went on to giving occasional tours to people who wanted to experience the history of this iconic San Francisco creative crucible where so many of their favorite albums were born, and collating scant materials she could find on the history of “The Plant” into one big binder. That binder served as the seed of this book.

Giacona’s interviews for the book include Arne Frager, the producer, engineer, and former owner of The Plant Studios from 93' til 2008, and Ken Caillat, producer of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours”,album recorded at The Record Plant Sausalito in 1976 and considered one of the greatest rock and roll albums of all time. The book contains her curated collection of vinyl and CD covers for the discography of The Record Plant, and historical photographs, documents, and interviews from former receptionists, managers, engineers, producers, and staff.
